Program Notes

What are you afraid of? The void, spiders, old age, the end of the world? Whatever your deepest terror, it inexorably stems from one of our four primal fears: fear of the outside, fear of the inside, fear of isolation, and fear of annihilation. This cycle of four string quartets offers an archaeology of our unconscious mind, stirring up these fundamental anxieties that paralyze and drive us daily.

I. Flamma (fire, flame, blaze) explores the fear of the outside: fear of the unknown, of the other, of lurking danger, fear of crowds, revolts, or natural disasters... It is the anxiety of seeing our environment turn against us.

II. Fuira (madness, frenzy, obsession) explores the fear of the inside, of oneself, of losing one's identity, memory, or sanity, of sinking into alienation and madness. The intimate threat that comes from within.

III. Fractum (fracture, break) explores the fear of fracture: separation from a friend, a lover, family, society. It is the terror of abandonment, solitude, isolation.

IV. Finis (end) explores the supreme fear looming above all others: death. Disappearance, dissolution, total annihilation, the inexorable erasure of self from the world.

This Catharsis cycle is a musical dive into our own darkness, hoping, through its crossing, to bring a faint light into it. For is it not said that facing one's fears is already stripping them of some of their power?
