Program Notes
In the whitewashed cellars of some Andalusian villages, when the night is deep and the candle flames make reason falter, a strange silence falls over the gathering. The guitar stops singing, conversations freeze, and something invisible seems to move through the room. Then a dancer rises. She lifts an arm, arcs a leg. Soon her hands snap, her feet strike the floor, and her gaze darkens, as if a deep, unseen force has taken hold of her. The elders called it the duende.
Neither technique, nor grace, nor virtuosity: duende is a presence. A struggle. A dark fire that courses through the artist’s body, turning dance or music into a battle against her own abyss. Federico García Lorca wrote that duende “does not appear unless it senses a possibility of death.” It comes only when the artist lays her skin on the table.
For duende is not a grace: it is a possession. And when it comes, even for a moment, it never leaves the artist unchanged.
Version for guitar imagined by the composer.
